Autism Research and Resources of Oregon (ARRO) is a non-profit organization dedicated, in part, to developing, and maintaining, the ARRO Westside Center so it can continue to provide the Autism community with a place to meet, share ideas, offer support, and provide autism-related services. Financial support for the Center is derived entirely from Donations from the community, from corporate sponsors, and through fun filled events like annual Sean’s Run from Autism, Arrtism Pirate Run, as well as events including lectures, panel discussions and more. Introduction

This lecture will give an overview of the gut-brain connection and make suggestions for herbs and foods that are healing to sensitive children. Specific foods, recipes, and strategies for feeding children with Autism, ADHD, ADD, and Aspergers will be included along with a cooking demonstration.

Introduction

Jenell Streeter, M.S. in Psychology (expert parent, mother of children on the spectrum) will be facilitating the group. The goal is for every attendee to have at least one of their specific issues addressed in the session.

Speakers :

Jenell Streeter has a Master of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Speech Communication.  She is a mother and primary care provider of three children on the spectrum and one typically developing child.  She is respected as a skilled case manager and advocate for her children.  Jenell has utilized private speech and language pathologists, private occupational therapists, ASD therapists, in-home support and respite providers.  She coordinates services, both medical and educational.  On the behalf of her children’s education, she participates in meetings regarding IEPs, staff training, problem solving, data gathering, and intervention strategies.  In her role, she is busy exploring and implementing treatments and therapies, attending conferences and training seminars, and participating in parent chat groups.  Prior to becoming a parent, Jenell taught classes at Portland State University and worked as a research assistant, psychology technician and a consultant.  Jenell has recently begun a business, Autism Consulting, Coaching, and Training (ACCT).  Whether working with parents, businesses, school districts, etc., the goal is the same: support the growth of those with ASD to enhance their happiness, health and safety.  As a parent herself, she understands the need for practical, realistic approaches to solving real world problems and increasing independence.

This will be the last coaching session with 2 hours devoted to addressing participants’ individual questions.  The monthly sessions starting in February will be workshops focused on a specific topic with very limited time to address off topic concerns and challenges.

It’s that time of year again! The time you’ve all been waiting for! It’s time to get ready for Sean’s Run 2012 - the best way for runners to get an early start on the season while doing good!

Just in case you don’t already have it on your calendar, April 28th (Saturday), 2012 marks the date of Sean’s Run from Autism 2012, the annual, scenic, out and back, fundraising run/walk to benefit Autism Research and Resources of Oregon (ARRO).

2012 marks the 5th year of our annual ARROAutism fundraising run, and the second year that funds raised will help contribute to the ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center; the first step towards ARRO’s Mission to create an Autism Center in Oregon.

Every runner, walker, and supporter, whether man, woman or child, who joins us for the 5K, 10K, kids run, and/or to cheer from the sidelines, is helping make a difference for Sean, and in the lives of thousands of adults and children throughout Oregon and SW Washington.

Denise McMerrick has been a consultant to families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, in the Portland area, since 2007. She has successfully implemented the GFCF diet for her recovering son over the past 5 ½ years, and found it to be a critical healing component. Studying, and living with, the special diets, Denise brings to our community not only the information to understand the GFCF diet… but the practical experience as well.

Details

This 1.5 hour lecture is an introduction to the GFCF diet, and the role it plays in treating Autism Spectrum Disorders. The presentation is designed to give parents and caregivers a basic overview of the diet, implementation strategies, trouble-shooting, and clarifying misconceptions surrounding this particular diet. Handouts included, Gift Bag of GFCF Products to take home, a Book Give-A-Way, and more! The lecture is approximately 1 ½ hours. Although aimed at educating parents, the material covered may also be valuable for developmental therapists, educators, medical/dietary practitioners, and anyone who is interested to learn about why many kids on the autism spectrum are on special diets.

Please join us for a support group for Grandparents and other relatives (such as aunts and uncles) raising and parenting children.
The group is for those who were most likely not expecting to be raising children at this time in their lives. Whatever your situation, one thing is clear; your lives have changed with the addition of someone else’s children. These changes may bring happiness or sadness, but there is a change. And with that change, comes stress. Understanding the stress and finding proper ways to deal with it is vital for our own emotional and physical health as well as for the health of your children.
Meetings are held every other Friday.
