The ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center is pleased to be able to host a monthly Family Social.

Bring the whole family! Bring a game! Your outside food is totally welcome here*!

It’s summer in Oregon (Yayyyy). Guess what – we have air conditioning! So, come and play with us at the Westside Family and Community Center, a place to gather with those you also don’t have to explain it to.

Want a home court advantage? Bring your own games. The coffee, tea, and a small supply of games and snacks and more are here. So, round up your family for an outing to ARRO and meet us here on Saturday. See you at the game table!

Details

Come meet new friends, visit with old, and enjoy some casual family bonding at this once a month Family Social. A “make yourself at home” atmosphere will be provided, where you can play a game, watch a movie, and mingle with friends. Bring a peanut free munchie* to share, and coffee/tea/water beverages will be provided. A $5 donation is requested to cover facility use and food.

*Please, no peanut/nut products due to allergies.

Kathy Henley presents ARROAutism Medical Information Support GroupPresented by Kathy Henley, President of the ARRO Board, the Medical Information Support Group is a FREE  information support group for family members of individuals with Autism. Kathy discusses Autism medical research information from medical articles and conferences.

Questions are welcome and encouraged so that families can make informed medical decisions. The format includes review of medical articles and web information, and invited speakers in any of the medical and therapeutic specialties.

All interested parties are welcome to attend. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required.

Meetings are held January through October. There is no meeting in November or December. Call ahead to confirm the meeting, especially if the weather is snowy or icy.

Autism Researcher E Gene Stubbs MD Vitamin DAssociate Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Pediatrics (Oregon Health and Sciences University, Portland, Oregon), Dr. Stubbs is currently engaged in a “Study of the use of Vitamin D to prevent Autism in newborn siblings” based out of the EverGreen Center in Oregon City.

Jan Van Santen Ph.D

Autism Researcher Jan Van Santen PhD Director CSLUDirector and Professor of Oregon Health and Science University’s “Center for Spoken Language and Understanding,” Dr. van Santen’s current research interests are focused on a broad range of problems in speech and language technology, with special emphasis on basic and applied speech and language technology research for communication disorders.

Jean-Baptiste Roullet, Ph.D

Autism Researcher Jean Baptiste Roullet PhD OHSUResearch Associate Professor and Manager of the Pediatrics Research Laboratories at Oregon Health and Science University (Portland, Oregon), Dr. Roullet’s current research interests include rare diseases caused by disorders of the sterol and isoprenoid pathway, autism and stem cell research.

Annette Estes Ph.D and Stephen R. Dager, MD

Stephen R. Dager, MD from University of WashingtonAnnette Mercer Estes, PhD from University of WashingtonDoctors Stephen R. Dager and Annette Estes, researchers at the University of Washington and Children’s Hospital, want to learn more about brain development in young siblings of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).  The information gained in their IBIS study may improve methods of early detection and improve intervention for infants who may be at risk for developing autism and lead to better outcome for these young children and their families.

Jen Morgan and Amanda Tepfer

PhD students Jen Morgan and Amanda Tepfer from Oregon State University’s Movement Studies in Disability Program will present on a study aimed at understanding the physical fitness of school-aged children with Autism. Oregon State University Associate Professor Megan MacDonald, PhD is the Principal Investigator for this study.

The ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center is pleased to be able to host the PAN/ASO sponsored Family Social.

Bring the whole family! Bring a game! Your outside food is totally welcome here*!

July brings Independence Day to the United States, and summer to Oregon (Yayyyy). Autism families should celebrate their independence, too, so we invite you to come and play with us at the Westside Family and Community Center, a place to gather with those you also don’t have to explain it to. We’ll celebrate your independence with a barbeque and some games outside.

Autism Research and Resources of Oregon requests the pleasure of your company at a fundraising dinner to be held on June 30th, 2012.

The Menu

Hors  d’oeuvres

A variety of simple fruits and vegetables

Main Course

Roast Chicken

Roast Beef

Fillet of Salmon

Vegetarian selection

Variety of Steamed and Sauteed vegetables

Desserts

Fruit Salad

Gluten Free German Chocolate Cake

Gluten and dairy free “ice cream”

Drinks

This will be an alcohol-free dining event. Drinks will include:

Coffee, Tea, Sparkling Cider, Water

Price :

$50 per plate

(a plate includes all three courses; hors d’ouvres, main course, and dessert)

Time

We will begin serving hors D’ourves at 5pm.

The main course will be served beginning at 5:30 pm.

Please RSVP as soon as possible to ensure the correct amount of food is purchased.

ARROAutism Westside Center Open House

Did you know that the ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center is the only building in Oregon dedicated to the Autism Community?

There’s a lot more about the center that you may be interested in. So come on by on June 24th as we celebrate being open for 2 years. While you’re here, check out some of the upcoming activities, programs and lectures, and add to the “suggestion box” and give us some of your own ideas.

For those of you who have followed the center for awhile, check out some of the changes including :

  • A new gate, courtesy of Michael, a local Eagle Scout
  • A new large screen TV, courtesy of DonorsResource
  • The new kitchen floor, again courtesy of Michael a local Eagle Scout

We plan on having some fun activities outside, maybe some beach balls, maybe throw together a volleyball net, blow a few bubbles, and who knows what else.

Follow this post regularly as we develop this casual and fun day for all the ARROAutism followers, and for the entire Autism Community.
