Physical Activity Levels of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Who:

Movement Studies in Disability

Purpose:

If you have a child with Autism and a child without Autism then you are invited to participate in a research study conducted in the Movement Studies in Disability program. Obesity is a serious problem in the United States, and the population of children with Autism is even more susceptible to becoming obese. One of the strategies to combat obesity is to increase children’s physical activity levels, but currently, there is a limited understand on the physical activity of children with ASD. The purpose of this study is to obtain general information on the physical activity levels of children with Autism and compare them to their siblings without Autism.

We are studying this because the general thought is children with disabilities are less physically active. Specifically related to the population of children with ASD there is conflicting evidence so it is important to expand on this knowledge to gain a better understanding of children with ASD’s physical activity levels. Also in order to provide appropriate intervention services, it is important to understand the current level of physical activity for this population. This study may help support the need for more physical activity interventions.

Nutrients are vital building materials used in constructing the cells in our body and the metabolic functions of those cells. 95% of the supplements available have either synthetic or inorganic nutrients. Come to find out how synthetic vitamins are manufactured, why plant sourced nutrients are utilized better in the body and how you can read and understand what is on a supplement label. By the end of the class you will confidently know whether you want to be consuming a supplement based on the facts and not solely on the marketing information.

Our focus will be mainly on autism but it is good for all people, children and adults.

We can only hold 50 people so make your RSVP now.

Bring your current vitamin bottle and compare and learn more about your vitamins.

At 5:30 we will have a small potluck so feel free to bring some healthy snacks as that is our focus and shortly after we will have our presentation comparing the two.

He’s also done many evaluations with these children and advocated for their educational needs in the school setting. He’ll present a new, more comprehensive way to look at Autism and AS that would have far-reaching consequences for the kinds of services children and families would receive from medical and mental health providers, schools, and insurance companies. More importantly, he would show a way for families to advocate for themselves and their children to improve functioning and long-term independence for everyone.

Corporate Sponsorship for Sean’s Run 2012

The vision for “Sean’s Run from Autism” has three facets…

  • To provide a fun outlet for bringing the people of our community together
  • To expand awareness about Autism and its effect on individuals, families and communities
  • To make a difference in the lives of individuals and families with Autism

This 5K run/walk and 10K run benefits the Autism Research and Resources of Oregon (ARRO).  ARRO was founded by parents and professionals in 2000 to develop a research, treatment and services Center for individuals with Autism in Portland, Oregon.  The mission of ARRO is to produce and promote a center of excellence in the field of Autism research and services in the state of Oregon.   Some facts about the situation in Oregon…

  • Since 1985 the number of Oregon children diagnosed with Autism has risen from 30 to 8,000 (2010).
  • The more than 4,000 children in the Portland metro area who qualify as having Autism usually receive minimal educational services and limited county Developmental Disabilities case management services.
  • Most medical insurance policies do not cover treatment for Autism, including the Oregon Health Plan.
  • Based on emerging medical information and actual increases in the numbers qualifying for educational Autism services, the occurrence rate for Autism is rapidly increasing. It is now given by the CDC as 1 per 110 children. “It is estimated that between 1 in 80 and 1 in 240 with an average of 1 in 110 children in the United States have an ASD. Studies in Asia, Europe, and North America have identified individuals with an ASD with an approximate prevalence of 0.6% to over 1%.   http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/Autism/data.html
In Oregon the estimates are around 1 in 71.
  • ARRO’s Westside Family and Community Center is the ONLY building dedicated to services focusing on improving the lives of individuals with Autism in Oregon.

Through our combined efforts, we will help ARRO expand and do even more. There is only so much we can each do individually, but as we join together, we can make a significant difference. By participating in this event, you will help ARRO reach more individuals and families affected by Autism and have a great time doing it.

Original at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/08/Grilling.jpg/800px-Grilling.jpgAttention Autism Dads: start out April Awareness month, and set the stage for an all new Autism Dads group with a BBQ and potlach (noting that the Center is nut free) at the ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center in Beaverton, Oregon.

This joint ASO and ARRO initiative aims to become a monthly event, recurring on the afternoon of the first Sunday of each month. Don’t wait though, because ony those who attend the BBQ on April 1st, 2012 will have first dibs on naming our new group!

There is no cap on the number of attendees, but please RSVP so we can plan for food etc.

For this initial meeting, we encourage you to come without your kids so that you have greater opportunity to meet other Dads and have conversations you wouldn’t have with with your kids around.

If you find you can only come with kids, please let us know as soon as possible and we will “try” (no promises here) to arrange to have someone available here to help watch them, or can put you in touch with someone who may be able to help.
