Evergreen Center – Bronze Sponsor for Sean’s Run 2013

Sean's Run from Autism 2013 logoWe’d like to thank the Evergreen Center for sponsoring Sean’s Run 2013!

The Evergreen Center is a Medical Center Oregon City.

There is hope for your child! While “autism” is not directly treatable, children with autism spectrum and related disorders have many treatable medical problems. When we restore health and balance to the body, the symptoms of autism improve or disappear.

Welcome to Sean’s Run 2013, Evergreen Center, and thank you for helping to improve the lives of families living with Autism.

Umpqua Bank – Silver Sponsor for Sean’s Run 2013

Umpqua Bank - Sean's Run 2013 Silver SponsorWe’d like to thank Umpqua Bank for sponsoring Sean’s Run 2013!

This is not the first time Umpqua Bank has helped ARROAutism, having previously assisted with raising funds via the Tanasbourne Store for our annual Holiday Family Assistance Program.

There’s a sign that hangs in every Umpqua Bank that reads “Welcome to the World’s Greatest Bank.” This is not a tagline. It’s a state of mind.

We concur. Welcome to Sean’s Run 2013, Umpqua Bank, and thank you for helping to improve the lives of families living with Autism.

Spring Forward on Sunday March 10th 2013 at 2 AM

Quick reminder to everyone out there in ARROland to set your clocks forward on March 10th at 2 AM, or sometime when you’re actually awake.

Clock showing sequence of springing forward from 2am to 3am

Daylight Savings Time – A Brief History

Daylight Savings Time (also known as DST) has been around since the late 1800s, and is probably just as controversial now as it was likely to have been then. Not every country uses daylight savings time. In fact, Russia will NOT fall back this year when much of the world does. In the United States, Arizona and Hawaii do not observe Daylight Savings Time.

What’s more, the start and end dates of Daylight Savings Time vary from time to time, and from country to country. In the United States, Daylight Savings Time was extended several weeks back in 2007 as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. As a result, Daylight Savings Time in the United States (Oregon included) starts (springs forward) on the second (2nd) Sunday in March, and ends (falls back) on the first (1st) Sunday in November.

Impact of Daylight Savings Time on Autism

Countless Studies have been conducted on the impacts of Daylight Savings Time, not the least of which have been on human health, especially as it relates to the interruption of natural biorhythms and sleep cycles. While I am not aware of any studies specifically on DST and Autism, the same health impacts will obviously be at play. In addition, there are routine adjustments to consider. To help minimize those impacts, and any confusion that might come into play, try to walk through your family’s frequently visited places and make a list of clocks that will need to be changed and/or may cause confusion. Here are just a few to consider :

  • Telephones (land line phones and Cell phones)
  • Ipads
  • Tablets
  • Watches
  • Walkmen
  • MP3 Players
  • Bedside Clocks
  • Bathroom Clocks
  • Oven
  • Refrigerator (fridge)
  • Microwave
  • DVD Player
  • Thermostat
  • Computers (most will change themselves)
  • Stereos
  • Car Stereo
  • Coffee Pot
  • Pagers
  • DVRs
  • Voice Recorders
  • Clocks at School
  • Clocks at Therapy
  • Game Systems
  • ___________________

And, remember, the Fire department also reminds us that this is a good time to check the batteries in our Smoke Detectors. This is obviously a significant issue for those with sensory integration issues, so, if you haven’t already, put this on the calendar to do while your sound sensitive family members are at school, work, or another appointment.

Just for Laughs

And, just for laughs, I’ve thrown in this throwback to a link to this little Daylight Savings Time Blog by a couple of local Westside Autism Moms.

Corporate Sponsorship for Sean’s Run 2013

Logo for Sean's Run 2013Sean’s Run from Autism is an annual event to raise money for Autism Research and
Resources of Oregon (ARRO) and its many projects. ARRO is an organization supporting
individuals and families with Autism. We opened the ARRO Westside Family and
Community Center, a safe place where they can come to find resources and participate
in activities.

Our goal is to nurture individuals and families by providing a center of resources,
including services. Families have to search high and low for resources to address Autism.
We help them by bringing a variety of resources together in one space. Your support
allows us to continue our outreach efforts for individuals and families with Autism in
Oregon.

Sean’s Run is inspired by Sean Henley, a young man with Autism who runs the 10K leg of
the race to show people that his Autism does not stop him from participating in life and
in his community! Sean runs to help us.

Autism Dads and Men (ADaM)

Autism Dads and Men is a joint ARROAutism/ Autism Society of Oregon effort to connect the men of the Autism community. You are invited to join this group if you are any of the following : a father or grandfather of a child (of any age) on the spectrum, an adult man who is on the spectrum, including adult men who are on the spectrum and have ASD and/or neurotypical children.

This group meets once a month, on the first Sunday of each month, typically at the ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center. We also have a yahoo group, which you can find at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/arrodads/ but problems with posting useful links there have caused us to move the majority of our interactions to Facebook.

ADaM GUIDELINES

1. This group is for just for Dads/GrandDads who have children (including adult children) on the Autism Spectrum, and adult men who are, themselves, on the spectrum, and who live in Oregon and SW Washington.

2. Providers and therapists may email autismdadsandmen@groups.facebook.com and your information will be considered for posting.

3. While we would love to support anyone with their own autism related business, please do not use the board for spamming. Please email us at autismdadsandmen@groups.facebook.com and we will be happy to post your information on our resource page.

4. As always, to protect our culture of support, please remember to keep any disagreements polite and respectful.

HOW TO JOIN Autism Dads and Men

If you are a Dad/GrandDad and have a child on the Autism Spectrum, or are an adult man on the Autism Spectrum, and you live in Oregon and SW Washington, we invite you to request to join our group ***AND*** send an email to arrodads@yahoogroups.com

In your email please let us know how you found us and the age of your child, or indicate that you are a male on the spectrum. We like to keep our page “safe” and just for Autism Dads and Men.

A little history of Autism Dads and Men (ADaM)

Dan Yedinak and Al Ochosa – Started this group in March of 2012.
Dana St. John – created and administers the Yahoo Group

Dan Yedinak, Al Ochosa, Daniel Brewer, Jim Sellers, John Henley, Paul Terdal and a small number of other men have been highly active advocates in the Autism Community for years and have discussed this idea off and on. Part of the discussion has been around naming. One idea was the WADs – Westside Autism Dads, as a spinoff of the Westside Autism Moms. While this was highly entertaining, it didn’t adequately describe the scope of our mission. Boys are 4 times more likely to be diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum as girls, and we really want to help foster the Father-Son relationship, which includes the development of boys into men. This group intends to actively recognize that growth, AND the large number of adult men already in the community.

Activities in this group will be mixed : some will be just for the adults, others will include younger children. And we’d like to encourage all the men in the group to create their own activities and events, and make this as social as it is supportive. The more active we are together as a community, the better, and stronger, and more successful we will all be.

Westside Autism Moms (WAM)

Westside Autism Moms (WAM) is one of the sources of inspiration for this group. We’d also like to thank them for providing a template for us to launch this group. If you are looking for something for the Autism Mom in your life, please tell them about : https://www.facebook.com/groups/WAMmoms/

Sean’s Run 2013 Registration Now Open

Sean's Run from Autism 2013 April 27th at Oak's Park

Sean’s Run from Autism, the annual 5K walk/run and 10K run, benefitting Autism Research and Resources of Oregon, is now open for Pre-registration via our online registration at http://signmeup.seansrun.org !

About ARROAutism

Autism Research and Resources of Oregon (ARROAutism) is a not-for-profit organization supporting individuals and families with Autism. Our goal is to nurture families with Autism by providing a center of resources. Historically, families have had to search high and low for services. We aim to change that by bringing resources together in one space.

Today, that center exists as a first of its kind Autism Community Center on 170th Avenue in Beaverton. Our Westside Family and Community Center is open to all to rent and use for special events, and is also the site of a wide variety of Autism community social events, informational lectures, and various meetings.

Sean’s Run

Our 2013 Sean’s Run from Autism is an out and back event with three categories, all of which begin and end at Historic Oak’s Park.

    • 10K Run

      • The signature 10K run, (inspired and run by Sean – wearing bib number 001) begins at Oak’s Park, heads south on Oak’s Park Way, turns at Spokane Street to head North on the SpringWater trail, continues on the paved path, turns around near the milepost 1 marker (South of the Ross Island Bridge), and then returns along the same outbound path finishing where the race started at Oak’s Park.
      • Volunteers and water will be stationed at the 5K and 10K turnaround points. Due to time constraints we ask that the 10K route only be used by runners who are confident that they can complete the course in less than 1 hour and 45 minutes.
      • To sign up for the 10K run, visit http://signmeup.seansrun.org and choose the 10K Run.

    • 5K Run

      • The 5K Run begins at Oak’s Park, heads south on Oak’s Park Way, turns at Spokane Street to head North on the SpringWater trail, continues on the paved path, turns around near the Oak’s Bottom Trail entrance, and then returns along the same outbound path finishing where the race started at Oak’s Park.
      • Volunteers will be stationed at crossings and strategic points, including a water station at the 5K turnaround.
      • To sign up for the 5K Run, visit http://signmeup.seansrun.org and choose the 5K Run.

    • 5K Walk

      • The 5K walk route is identical to the 5K run route. The start time for the walk route will be dependent on the number of participants.
      • To sign up for the 5K walk, visit http://signmeup.seansrun.org and choose the 5K walk.

    • Reminders :

      • Be aware that the Sean’s Run course is not reserved, so there will be unrelated walkers, runners and bicyclists on the course. Please walk and run no more than 2 abreast and be alert for others who may be traveling faster than you, or are approaching from the other direction.
      • While we do our best to adhere to a strict schedule, we spring conditions and other issues may require us to make last minute adjustments to the start times. Please plan to complete registration before 10 AM and plan to be ready by 10am for the pre-run briefing.

Thank you for your interest in Sean’s Run from Autism. As a participant, a supporter, a sponsor, or a volunteer in any capacity you are part of a team, a community, helping to make a positive difference in the lives of the individuals and families living with Autism. We couldn’t be here without you, and we look forward to seeing you at this year’s run. Thak you, and – Have fun!
