ARROAutism Reaches 100 followers in Facebook

ARRO Adds Facebook Page

In October of 2010 Autism Research and Resources of Oregon expanded its online presence to include a Facebook Page at http://www.facebook.com/ARROAutism . By October 18th, 2010, ARRO had reached the mininum number of followers to create a custom URL. While Facebook growth has been slow, activity at ARRO has been anything but.

ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center Growing

After initially taking to the walls and expanding the interior, the ARROAutism Westside Family and Community Center has continued to be busy, adding an internet capable Blu-Ray player and stereo surround system, plus work in progress to add a ceiling mounted projector to tie into that system, and an ever growing list of classes, lectures and groups taking advantage of the center. Here are just a few of the Center Happenings :

You can learn more about the Westside Center events by visiting http://arroautism.org/westside , or by searching the Archives for posts with the Westside Family and Community Center category.

Mission

The Autism Research & Resources of Oregon (ARRO) will produce and promote a center of excellence in the field of autism research and services in the state of Oregon. This center will be known as the Oregon Autism Research & Services Center. This Center will have as the core value nurturing of individuals and families of individuals with autism so that they may contribute as appropriate at the level and the time when they are ready to contribute.

The six thrusts of the center are:

Medicine; research and clinical services
Education; research and direct services
Interventions and therapies, evaluation and development
Vocational training, on site and off site services
Social skills training for the individuals with autism of all ages
Services; the identification of and coordination with existing agencies, and development of new programs that benefit both the individuals with autism and their families.

The Oregon Autism Research & Services Center will:

Be a physical place.
Work with autism and autism like disorders such as Asperger Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorders.
Work with individuals with autism of all ages and their families.
Have multidisciplinary research which includes medical, educational, psychological, social services, and/or vocational training aspects.
A scientific think tank for cutting edge research into interventions, therapies, treatments and causes of autism
Promote the inclusion of individuals with autism in their families and communities.
Help families assist each other by encouraging grassroots and family driven programs.
Create ongoing relationships with businesses, schools, and community service agencies to develop skills so that these individuals can be contributing employees and citizens.
Verify all projects and programs using scientific research methodologies and documentation.
Develop best practices paradigms for all projects undertaken.
Develop anchor tenants and partners:
– house and partner with a medical/dental clinic
– house an alternative school with model classrooms that will develop and demonstrate best practices
– partner with local universities to provide training prototypes and practicums for future professionals in field addressing these disorders.
– house and partner small business to encourage the development of vocational training opportunities.
Rent or provide office space and meeting places for autism related organizations (both non-profit and for profit) and agencies; such as Autism Society of Oregon, Project PACE, Center for the Study of Autism, Autistic Children’s Activity Program, Inc., county developmental disabilities program offices, etc.
Do co-ventures with off-site businesses to provide vocational training and employment opportunities.
Provide a place that fosters and advances the existence and development of multidisciplinary model programs and services.
Do what is required for the person with autism to make the maximum recovery from autism; not the minimum required by law or allowed by insurance companies. Help the person with autism lead their lives to the fullest measure possible. Help the families of people with autism lead full lives, not lives overcome by the existence of autism in their family member.
Be a place where professionals, families, and individuals with autism can work, interact, recreate, and play together; and feel secure so they may learn and grow.

Pirate Party
August 20, 2011

Dear PACE Fan,

We DEMAND (Aaarrgg!) that you attend this year’s Pirate Party on August 20, 2011.  We hope you will support our fund-raising events for PACE Foundation, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization.

LewisThe profits from the Pirate Party will benefit PACE Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

The PACE Foundation provides scholarships to families with a child with autism to attend educational training including PACE Place Immersion Workshops and the PACE Place Family Immersion Week.

Funds raised at last year’s Pirate Party provided $1,300 in scholarship funds to five families to attend workshop trainings.  $1,000 scholarships have also been offered for the PACE Place Immersion week to families with a parent who is a police office, fire fighter, or serves in the military.

This is a good start, but we need to do more to support families.

Scholarships Benefit Families
I wanted to thank the PACE Foundation so much for awarding me the scholarship that allowed me to attend the workshop!  I could not have attended if it wasn’t for your generosity and it has meant a world of difference in our lives!

I was searching desperately for any kind of help to attempt to “get my girl back!”  My daughter, who is autistic, has been through some very rough times personally and her trauma has caused her to become very aggressive and violent.

Your program has given me hope!  Every day I see progress and I get “glimmers” of my daughter coming back to me!  You teach with kindness and true understanding of our special children and I think that has been the key in helping her through.  The insight you gave as to how their brain functions was amazing!

A Million Thanks, Deb & daughter

About Qigong (CHEE-gong) Massage:

Parents can implement a simple, effective Qigong Massage Program in the home that has been scientifically proven to reduce autistic behavior and tantrums, and to aid in social and language learning.

Several research studies, including a randomized, controlled design study, have been conducted to date on the effectiveness of Qigong Sensory Training (QST) for autism spectrum disorder. At the end of five months of QST therapy, treated children show improved behavior and social/language skills, and decreased sensory and self-regulatory impairment, compared to the children in the control group.
